On The Drift

Dear @Twitter iPhone app: For the sake of being open-minded, I’ve tried living with the #dickbar, but I just can’t do it forever. I’m sure that you did eye-tracking studies on the old UI and determined that the typical user’s gaze is squarely beneath the navigation bar 90% of the time when using the app. I can understand thinking that this is a good place to put trending topics, because you’ve convinced yourself that even promoted trends are not ads.

But an ad is what I say it is, because an ad is a subjective experience. An ad is unrequested and non-relevant pushed information. If I’m hungry and looking for a place to eat, a bilboard for a restaurant is an aid, not an ad. By placing the dickbar where you did, you’ve made ads more important than the relevant information that I have requested out of the service. Not good.

Make trending topics relevant to meĀ if you want me to like them. Good luck with that. If you manage, I will no longer think of the dickbar as a sucky aspect of an otherwise clean UI, showing me ads laid over relevant information like a perpetual floating window over an interesting website. It will instead just be a sucky aspect of an otherwise clean UI.
